Nonetheless, their son Albert (Jeremy Irvine) becomes attached to the horse and names him Joey. In 1914, as war with Germany is declared and heavy rains ruin the family's crops, Ted has no choice but to sell Joey to the army.

Albert tries to prevent this but is unsuccessful. He then makes a promise to himself that he will search for Joey again when he's old enough to join the army.
